The Mystery of Godliness
Walton Padelford
"And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory" (1 Timothy 3:16).
Godliness is a mystery.  Many times when we hear the word, "godliness," we immediately think of ways in which we can become more godly.  We might think of how far short we have fallen from keeping the ten commandments, for instance.  We might think of a continuing problem of anger in our lives, or lack of forgiveness toward other people, or lack of internal peace, or of turmoil in the home.  These sin problems certainly indicate that we have fallen short of the glory of God.  However, godliness directly concerns Christ.  Godliness comes from Jesus Christ, not from ourselves.  COMPLETE ESSAY

Wine and the Scriptures
Ross Guthrie
   Why a study on wine?
• God seems to have given CCC the task of recapturing essential Christianity.  What is at the heart of the faith?  What matters in the faith?  What is flexible about the faith and church life?  What do you have to be right about to be in the faith?  What can you be wrong about and still be in the faith?
• From the resurrection forward, the church has always stressed the Eucharist as essential to worship in the Sunday gathering of the church.  The Lord’s Supper is at the heart of why we gather.  To worship God is to remember.  COMPLETE ESSAY
Ethics in the Pressure Cooker - The Example of Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Walton Padelford
Dietrich Bonhoeffer  lived in the maelstrom of Nazi Germany before and during World War II.  He was born February 4, 1906 in Breslau, Germany and he died at the hands of the Nazis in the Bavarian village of Schönberg on April 9, 1945 at the age of thirty-nine.  He came from an outstanding family of professional people.  His father was a psychiatrist on the teaching faculty of Berlin University, and his great-grandfather had been a well-known professor of church history in Jena. Dietrich was also a talented musician, but he failed to win a piano scholarship for which he was applying.  After this, he made the decision to study theology.  He began his studies at the age of eighteen in Berlin University from which he graduated with a licentiate in 1927.   COMPLETE ESSAY
Christ Community Church at Worship
Walton Padelford
The elements of worship at Christ Community Church fall into four major headings: liturgy, singing, preaching and Eucharist.  We are following the Biblical pattern of heavenly worship given to us in the Book of Revelation.  This pattern is not new, but has been used in Christ’s churches from the earliest days of the Christian era.  This teaching in Revelation Chapters four and five is particularly relevant for us today as it follows directly from the teaching on the Laodicean church in Revelation Chapter 3.
The Laodicean church is a rich church which to herself appears that she has no needs.  Jesus calls her wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked.  This church and the people are wretched which means that they are living at a level almost devoid of spiritual power and reality.   COMPLETE ESSAY
The Heart of Spiritual Gifts
Ross Guthrie
There is a lot of teaching on spiritual gifts within the church.  I recently taught on spiritual gifts at our Wednesday night meeting at Christ Community Church.  Many squirmed in their seats as I announced the topic.  I could almost hear the collective heavy sigh among my brothers and sisters as they were preparing themselves for another confusing session of “Find Your Spiritual Gift.”  I assured them that it was not my intention to beat them up or to get them to fill out a spiritual gift inventory.  In fact, for the three weeks I taught on spiritual gifts, I never discussed the list of gifts in I Corinthians 12 or Romans 12 in detail.  Too often, the focus of a spiritual gifts study is how you can find your spiritual gift, find fulfillment in your life in Jesus, and how you can live in the middle of God’s will.  COMPLETE ESSAY
God’s Sovereignty in Salvation
Walton Padelford
We could say much about man’s duty and responsibility to believe, but the topic for reflection here is God’s sovereignty in salvation.  We might begin by looking at unconditional election.  Every denomination has teaching on the doctrine of election including the Southern Baptist Convention which has a rich heritage of theology from the founders; Boyce, Broadus, Manly, Dagg, and Mell.
There are essentially two competing views of election; conditional election and unconditional election.  Conditional election means that God chose some for salvation because of a condition existing in that person; such as, goodness, or a propensity to believe the gospel, which would also be a type of goodness.
Lover in the Beloved, Transformed
Walton Padelford
Modern Protestant theology has a tendency to teach that the process of sanctification is something added, almost as an option, to the salvation that we have in Christ.  Isn’t it true, however, that salvation is a complete life, beginning with regeneration, continuing through the process of sanctification until the day of our death, and waiting for the resurrection of the body and eternity with the Lamb?  It is certainly true that salvation is by grace through faith (Ephesians 2:8), and also true that “For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, …” (Romans 8:29).  COMPLETE ESSAY
Christians in the Academy
Walton Padelford
What happens in the university when rational discourse ends?  What happens when two sides are at war, particularly the Christ side and the antichrist side?  C.S. Lewis's book, That Hideous Strength, gives us a look at some supernatural conflict; and in doing so provides us with a tall tale of spiritual warfare.
The story is the third in Lewis's famous space trilogy featuring the philologist, Professor Ransom, who now has returned from outer space and is firmly established in the little town of St. Anne's as the director of a small group of university professors and others who are on the right side (for the most part, they are followers of Christ).   COMPLETE ESSAY
The Bible as Christology
Walton Padelford
Emaus is a little village about five miles east of Jerusalem.  Two men are making their way from Jerusalem to the village on a Sunday afternoon, the week's first workday.  Over the last three years, they have experienced the time of their lives as they traveled with Jesus from Galilee to Jerusalem.  They had cast out demons from people who were so grotesquely ill that all hope for recovery had been abandoned.  They had seen such people restored to their families in good health and sound mind.  They had seen Jesus do amazing miracles of healing; they had heard sublime teaching from the young rabbi from Nazareth.  They had loved Jesus with fierce loyalty and passion.  COMPLETE ESSAY
Beginning to Be a Disciple
Walton Padelford
In the year 115 Ignatius, bishop of Antioch, was on a journey to Rome.  He was traveling as a prisoner under Roman guard having been condemned to death for the Christian faith that he confessed.  He would eventually make his way to the amphitheatre in Rome where he would be torn apart by wild beasts.
During his journey, Ignatius sent letters to six churches plus one letter to his friend, bishop Polycarp of Smyrna.  In a letter to the Ephesian church [whose bishop was Onesimus of biblical fame] he began this way; “…that being perfectly joined in one submission, submitting yourselves to your bishop and presbytery, you may be sanctified in all things.”  COMPLETE ESSAY
Comfort in Sin’s Prison
Craig Davis
The theology of the church fathers, as well as Paul and even Moses, holds that mankind is encumbered by a sin nature passed down from Adam, common to everyone. The biblical evidence for this argument is plentiful. But modern American evangelicals often seem to miss this point, and instead emphasize the sinful behavior of the unsaved and saved alike. As a result many Christians are overwhelmed by the individual sins they see in their lives and wrestle constantly with the assurance of their salvation. What follows are preachers who evangelize in worship services, talk about “nailing down your salvation” and multiple baptisms. If we could understand our sin nature, we would be freed from this spiritual roller-coaster. COMPLETE ESSAY

Wine as Symbol
Ross Guthrie
At his final meal with his disciples, Jesus chooses symbols to represent his body and his blood.  He does this to communicate to His disciples the importance of his death on the cross for the forgiveness of their sins.  He is the mediator between God and man and He as a good priest will bring the prescribed sacrifice to atone for sins thus fulfilling what was lacking in the sacrificial system of the previous covenant:  Himself.
- the symbols are bread for his body and wine for his blood.  Why is wine used by Jesus as a symbol for His blood. COMPLETE ESSAY

The Eucharist
Ross Guthrie
The Eucharist, a Greek word which means “make thanks”, is the sacrament of giving thanks for the death of Jesus Christ on the cross for our sins.  Through the offering of bread and wine, we give thanks for the offering of Christ’s body and blood on our behalf. COMPLETE ESSAY
Spanish reformer Juan de Valdés

Walton Padelford
Juan de Valdés (1500-1541) lived the greater part of his life in Naples, Italy.  There he taught the doctrine of justification by faith to a circle of disciples taken from the upper socio-economic class in Naples.  From there his writings and conversations circulated to many other parts and stimulated a desire among many for a reform in the church. Even though Juan did not break with the Catholic Church, he maintained the doctrine of man’s salvation by faith in Christ and not by works. COMPLETE ESSAY
Exegesis, Eisegesis and Bad Translation
Walton Padelford
Exegesis means carefully drawing meaning out of a text.  Eisegesis means reading a meaning or interpretation into a text.  Both of these exercises have implications for translation.  I am referring here particularly to Bible translation of one passage in which eisegesis has produced a confusing translation.
The passage in question is found in Genesis 22:17-18,  “indeed I will greatly bless you, and I will greatly multiply your seed as the stars of the heavens, and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your seed shall possess the gate of their enemies” (NASB).  COMPLETE ESSAY
Christian Leadership
Walton Padelford
In thinking about Christian leadership, I would like to discuss two things; Christian leadership and spiritual authority. These two things happily might come together in one person, or they might be somewhat divided.
The kingdom of God moves, expands, bears fruit, and becomes more profound on the basis of authority.  Spiritual authority is voluntarily exercised and voluntarily received.  In other words, a person may opt out of these roles if they wish. However, in order to have spiritual authority one must learn how to be under spiritual authority.
Ash Wednesday homily
Ross Guthrie
For many of you, this is your first Ash Wednesday.  Allowing someone to put ashes on you may seem strange.  But it’s not strange.  Very soon after the resurrection and ascension of Jesus, the church began using the forty days of Lent to prepare themselves for the celebration of Easter or Resurrection Sunday.  They baptized new converts on Easter Sunday and the forty days of Lent were to teach the basics of the faith and prepare the candidates for their new life of following Jesus.  During this time of preparation, many baptized members already in the church began to make this journey with these new converts and devoted themselves anew to Christ. The Transfiguration of Jesus
Ross Guthrie
Some eight days after these sayings, He took along Peter and John and James, and went up on the mountain to pray.  And while He was praying, the appearance of His face became different, and His clothing became white and gleaming.  And behold, two men were talking with Him; and they were Moses and Elijah, who, appearing in glory, were speaking of His departure which He was about to accomplish at Jerusalem.  Now Peter and his companions had been overcome with sleep; but when they were fully awake, they saw His glory and the two men standing with Him.  And as these were leaving Him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here; let us make three tabernacles: ...”
Ordinal time
Ross Guthrie
The church calendar or Christian calendar exists so that we might purposefully celebrate the life of Jesus.  We order our lives around the life of Jesus.  We die that we might live to Christ.  We follow Him.  So, too, we order the events of our lives around the pivotal moments in the life of Jesus: His birth, His baptism, His temptation and suffering, His death, His burial, His bodily resurrection, His ascending into heaven, His sending the Holy Spirit to us.  Our calendar should revolve around the calendar the church has observed since the time of Moses.  It is now different from the time of Moses because Jesus has fulfilled the intentions of the Old Testament feasts.  Therefore, the purpose of the Old Testament feasts and the events of the church calendar find their true meaning only in the life of Jesus.
Christology in Micah
Stephen Kennedy
To give us a little historical context for the book it is good to know that Micah prophesied around the same time as Isaiah which means that it is the period of time leading up to the Babylonian Exile and the Assyrians running over the kingdoms.  Many modern scholars would say that the whole point of the book is to show the warnings or prophesies that were given concerning this coming doom. This is one important point that should be seen and is obvious as you read through the passage but a paraphrase of Hengstenberg in his Christology of the Old Testament might help us to see a bit deeper into this book.
The Holy Family in the Temple (Lk. 2:41-52)
Ross Guthrie
I’m starting this morning with an illustration that comes straight from our congregation.  On Christmas Day, one of our little guys was allowed to stay up a little later than usual to watch a movie, probably a present received that day.  His mother had just left the house to walk over to her parent’s house which was next door.  It got to be around 9:30 or 9:45 and despite the fact that the movie had not ended, the father informed his son that it was time to go to bed.  His son mildly protested by saying, “Dad, Mom said that I could finish the movie.”  In a playful manner, the father responded, “Son, I’m the boss of the house.”
John the Prophet (Lk. 3:7-18)
Ross Guthrie
Brothers and sisters, hear these words of good news:
You children of snakes!  Haven’t you been warned to flee from the punishment of your sins.
Repent.  Stop sinning and do bodily activities that prove your faith.  If you don’t, you’re gonna die physically and spiritually.
Stop cheating, stop stealing and stop hoarding your stuff when you could be using it to help others in real need.  If you don’t, there is one who will come and shake you down and take your life and send you to an eternal place where you’ll be deprived of your basic necessities and burned with unquenchable fire.
Encouragement from Rev. 21:1-6
Ross Guthrie
Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth passed away, and there is no longer any sea.  And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, made ready as a bride adorned for her husband.  And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is among men, and He will dwell among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself will be among them and He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be any death; there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away.”  ...
